2022 Subaru Impreza in Albuquerque NM is Due for an Update

March 15th, 2021 by
Although the Impreza was the first model to be updated with Subaru’s Global platform four years ago, it seems to be the last for a model makeover. So, what’s in store for the 2022 Subaru Impreza in Albuquerque NM? It did receive a minor refresh for the 2020 model year, and the 2021 models will be the last of the current design. Subaru usually follows a five-year cycle for new model generations, so we should expect the next generation Impreza to make its debut sometime in the second half of 2021.
Because the company is pretty secretive about new products, not much is yet known about the future model, so predictions can only be based on the latest happenings with their other models. Subaru gave the recently newly-designed Forester and Outback several major changes underneath everything, but kept the exteriors very similar to previous generations, with the same overall dimensions and that distinctive Subaru styling. We expect the same “evolutionary, rather than revolutionary” action with the 2022 Subaru Impreza. Look for the same size and dimensions as the current generation, but marked differences beneath the skin of the new model.
New features added to the Forester and Outback included making steering responsive headlights standard equipment, and a seatbelt reminder for the back seat passengers; so, the 2022 Impreza will most likely receive the same. The newest EyeSight X driver-assist technology will certainly come standard in the future model, and of course the Impreza will have full-time AWD, a notable feature since most compact sedans don’t even offer all-wheel-drive.
The current model of the Impreza comes with a naturally aspirated 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that’s good for 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, which is efficient enough, but rival compacts can do better. This shortage of power, combined with the weight of the AWD system, creates a so-so acceleration time (about 9 seconds from 0-60 mph). Like its sibling the Subaru Crosstrek, which began offering a 2.5 liter with 182 hp on higher trims, the 2022 Subaru Impreza in Albuquerque NM would definitely benefit from a more powerful  engine.
The base model 2021 Impreza comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission in the lower trims (CVT is optional) and with a CVT in the two higher trims. If you enjoy driving a stick, you may want to get one soon, as Subaru (among other manufacturers) is gradually eliminating the manual, so as to equip every model with their EyeSight technology.
Fuel economy is very good for the current Impreza generation with an EPA rating of 33/28 MPG hwy/city for the base and Premium trims, and 34/27 MPG hwy/city for the Sport and Limited trims. The new direct-injection turbocharged engine produces more power, but surprisingly gets improved mileage! Let’s hope it happens for the 2022 Subaru Impreza in Albuquerque NM.
Until the new models arrive, come on over and check out the 2021 Impreza, or any of Subaru’s rugged and practical crossovers, or the sporty new BRZs or WRXs that are on sale now at Fiesta Subaru located at 8100 Lomas Blvd in Albuquerque. We can’t wait to share the love of Subaru with you!
